The Afghanistan National Cricket Team represents Afghanistan in men’s international cricket. The Afghanistan Cricket team is administered by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB). Afghanistan is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and plays all three formats.

Afghanistan National Cricket Team History:

  • The game of cricket was made popular in Afghanistan by the Afghan expatriates in Pakistan during the post-Soviet invasion era.
  • Most of the early national team members grew up in Pakistan and participated in domestic cricket with PCB support. The Afghanistan Cricket Federation (now ACB) was founded in 1995. Taliban initially banned cricket but made an exception in 2000, and the ACF received ICC recognition in 2001
  • The Afghanistan National Cricket Team entered Pakistan’s domestic setup in the 2001-02 season, participating in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and Cornelius Trophy. They started playing in Asian regional tournaments in 2004, finishing sixth in their first ACC Trophy.
  • The Afghanistan Cricket Team entered the World Cricket League, winning Division Five and Division Four in 2008. While they failed to qualify for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, they earned ODI status for four years. They played their first ODI against Scotland in 2011 and won the game by 89 runs.
  • Afghanistan won the ACC T20 Cup in 2010 and qualified for the 2010 ICC T20 World Cup.
  • Qualified for the 2015 Cricket World Cup by securing second place in the ICC World Cricket League Championship.
  • On 22 June 2017, the ICC awarded Afghanistan full Test status, along with Ireland. In 2018, Afghanistan played its first Test against India.

Afghanistan qualified for the first ICC ODI World Cup in 2015 and made it to the next two editions as well. In 2015, they managed just 1 win from 6 games whereas they lost all of their nine league games in 2019. In 2013, they won four games as they beat the likes of England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
