The South Africa National Cricket Team represents South Africa in men’s international cricket. The South African Cricket Team is also known as the Proteas. They are governed by Cricket South Africa (CSA). The South African cricket team is a full member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and plays all the three formats.

South Africa National Cricket Team History: 

  • South Africa entered first-class and international cricket in the 1888–89 season against England. The South African cricket team played its first Test in March 1889 against England in Port Elizabeth.
  • After England and Australia, they became the third team to play Test cricket.
  • They were part of the Imperial Cricket Conference formed in 1906 with England and Australia.
  • After struggling in early years, they won their first Test against England in 1906.
  • The ICC banned South Africa from international cricket in 1970 due to the anti-apartheid movement. The Proteas were reinstated as a Test nation in 1991, and played their first sanctioned international match since 1970 (and its first-ever ODI) against India in Calcutta on 10 November 1991.
  • Their first Test after re-admission was played against the West Indies in April 1992.
  • The South African team today is one of the strongest teams in the world.

South Africa National Cricket Team: ICC World Cup record:

The South African cricket team has been playing in the ICC World Cup since 1992. They are yet to win the World Cup. Their best performance in the marquee event is the semifinal appearance. The African country made it to the semifinal in 1992 before crashing out at the quarterfinal stage in 1996.

In 1999, they made it to the semifinal once again but failed to progress to the final. Four years later, they co-hosted the World Cup but could not go past the group stage. In 2007 and 2011, their journey came to an end at the semifinal and quarterfinal stage respectively.

In 2015, the South Africa National Cricket Team once again qualified for the semifinal but ended up on the losing side once again. In 2019, they bowed out at the league stage before making it to the semifinal in 2023.

South Africa National Cricket Team ICC T20 World Cup record:

South Africa hosted the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 and failed to make it to the semifinals. The Proteas are yet to win the T20 World Cup or qualify for the final. They have qualified for the semifinal on two occasions so far – 2009 and 2014.

South Africa National Cricket Team ICC Champions Trophy record:

The South African cricket team has participated in all the editions of the ICC Champions Trophy. In 1998, it won the inaugural editions of the tournament. It is South Africa’s only ICC trophy till date. After the triumph in the first edition, South Africa qualified for the semifinals on four other occasions – 2000, 2002, 2006, and 2013.
