Former England captain Michael Vaughan has reacted to the viral video showing Brian Lara and Carl Hooper struggling to contain their emotions after West Indies’ monumental win over Australia in Brisbane.

West Indies pulled off one of the biggest upsets in the game and stunned Australia by 8 runs in the second Test to level the two-match series. The win also helped the Caribbean outfit end their long wait for a Test win on Australian soil. They had not won a Test in Australia since 1997 and not many had given them even an outside chance of ending the losing streak in the recently-concluded series.

However, the Kraigg Brathwaite-led side came up with a spirited performance to beat the reigning World Test Championship champions in their backyard. The hero of the match was Shamar Joseph as he picked up seven wickets to inspire his side to a historic win.

Michael Vaughan reacts:

Chasing 216, Australia were comfortably placed at 113 for 2 before Shamar Joseph turned the game on its head. The right-arm pacer, who had to retire hurt 24 hours earlier after being hit on his toe by a crushing yorker from Mitchell Starc, troubled Australia with his pace and bounce. Steve Smith tried his best and remained unbeaten on 91 but ran out of partners as Joseph blew Australia away.

“Tears would have come to my eyes but I already cried when I got my five-wicket haul. It’s just happiness, when was the last time we won in Australia? I can’t even remember. Today’s a big day for us,” said Joseph.

As soon as Joseph uprooted the off-stump to dismiss Josh Hazlewood, former West Indies captains Carl Hooper and Brian Lara became emotional. Lara, who was in the commentary box at that time, was struggling to speak as his eyes were full of tears. Another video showed Hooper struggling to contain his emotions as well.

Michael Vaughan shared the video on X and once again highlighted the importance of Test cricket, writing: “BC Lara in tears .. Carl Hooper in tears .. That’s what it means .. T20 is great but it will never ever bring out this emotion .. x”
