Former Australian skipper Tim Paine lashed out at the former cricketers including Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist for praising West Indies for their Test win at Gabba. He believes that it wasn’t a great thing for the Pat Cummins-led side and it made him uncomfortable.

West Indies scripted history on Sunday (28th January) as they defeated Australia by 8 runs and leveled the two-match series. It came as a big moment for the Caribbean side because defeating the opposition at Gabba isn’t the cakewalk for all. Only India before them had achieved the feat and the recent loss marked their second defeat at fortress at Gabba in the last 33 years.

West Indies were exceptional with the bat and ball as they outplayed the opposition and sent a rousing statement. Their 8-run win over Australia saw them getting huge praise from the entire cricket fraternity. Even the legends of West Indies cricket in Brian Lara and Carl Hooper got emotional.

Apart from this Australian greats in Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist also were in awe of the West Indies defeating the Pat Cummins-led side. They hailed the Kraigg Braithwaite-led side and praied the win saying,  “what a moment in the history of the game.”

Tim Paine wasn’t impressed by this and couldn’t understand why former cricketers barracked against their team. He said that it was hard for him to listen to such comments. Speaking to SEN Tassie, he explained:

“I get it from a fan’s point of view, it annoys me when I hear past players commentating and almost barracking. I find that really hard to listen to. It was awesome for the West Indies. It was not great for Australia. It wasn’t a great performance. I just don’t like it. It makes me uncomfortable. Why are you barracking against your team? That you played in?”

Tim Paine was the captain of the Australian team for 23 Test matches between 2018 and 2021. He took the onus when Steve Smith got banned due to the sandpaper gate scandal in 2018. He played 35 Test matches for the team, scoring 1534 runs at an average of 32.63.

Apart from Tim Paine, Ian Healy lashes out at Australia; Says he wasn’t that happy with Pat Cummins and how he dealt with

He said that Pat Cummins was ‘glowing of the West Indies’. He lashed out at Australia, saying that they didn’t do well as they failed to chase the 216 runs. He elaborated:

“You know, I wasn’t that happy with Pat Cummins and how he dealt with. He’s a bit too glowing of the West Indies. I like that bit, but I don’t think he’s paying enough attention to his side’s underachievement. Do you reckon they played brilliantly? We only had to chase 216, that means they didn’t play brilliantly until the last day. Australia let them into that match big time.”

This was also the first time that Australia lost a pink-ball Test.
