Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy expressed his confidence in the team’s ability to clinch victory in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024. Daren Sammy highlighted the West Indies’ potential to become the first team to win the T20 tournament on home soil.

Daren Sammy captained the team across formats and guided them to T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016. During his illustrious career, Sammy featured in 38 Tests, 126 ODIs, and 68 T20Is, amassing 3781 runs and taking 209 wickets for the Caribbean side.

We Didn’t Lose A T20 Series In 2023 – Daren Sammy

Speaking ahead of the West Indies’ first T20I against Australia, Daren Sammy highlighted the team’s unbeaten record in the T20 series throughout 2023. Sammy emphasized the growing confidence and momentum within the squad.

“The way we’ve progressed over the last year, we didn’t lose a T20 series in 2023, confidence is building, momentum is building. We all believe that we can become the first team to actually win the tournament at home, and that’s what we are working towards,” Sammy said.

The Caribbean cricket team maintained an unbeaten record in the T20 series throughout 2023. They secured a 2-1 victory in the T20I series against South Africa in away conditions. Additionally, the Windies team achieved series wins against India (3-2) and England (3-2) last year.

The highly anticipated 2024 T20 World Cup will take place in the United States of America and the Caribbean from June 1 to 29. The West Indies are grouped with New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, and Papua New Guinea in Group C for the ICC T20 tournament.

They Will Not Be Short Of Cricket – Daren Sammy

Daren Sammy highlighted the exposure players receive through leagues like the IPL and PSL, contributing to their development and readiness for international competition.

“Our guys will not be playing international cricket, but they will not be short of cricket. So many leagues, (they) play in the IPL (Indian Premier League), the PSL (Pakistan Super League), and obviously playing (the World Cup) at home, it’s our conditions,” Sammy added.

I Expect To See A Different Attitude – Daren Sammy

The West Indies endured a disappointing 0-3 defeat in the recent ODI series against Australia. The visiting team struggled to pose a challenge to the dominant home side throughout the series. The Windies were outclassed by the Men in Yellow across all three matches.

Daren Sammy emphasized that the ODI series loss wouldn’t dampen the T20I team’s spirits. He expressed confidence in their ability to perform and secure victory in the upcoming series. Sammy anticipated a shift in attitude and a strong competitive spirit from the team.

“We’re not going to carry the ODI series to Hobart. It’s a fresh squad, a settled squad, more experience (and) guys who believe they are some of the best in the world to do it. I expect to see a different attitude, a different brand and we expect to come out there and compete and win,” Sammy further stated.
